Laura Nyahuye

FOUNDER & CREATIVE DIRECTOR
MAOKWO

Born and raised in Zimbabwe. Laura Nyahuye, is a creative visionary & artist helping migrant and marginalised communities to access the art and culture sector through skills development & networks. Through her practice and through her support of other artists and community members, she brings moments, memories, ideas and dreams into being.

Laura's work challenges societal perceptions to do with social issues affecting minoritised groups and seeks to find the common threads that connect humans from all backgrounds, creating a culture of solidarity and coexistence among humans from ALL tribes. Working with the conviction and belief that women are thermostats and heartbeats in communities around the globe. Every piece of her designs is a story within a story.

Laura is founder and Creative Director of Maokwo – an organisation using art as a form of advocacy and bridge building to bring about positive change. It advocates for better inclusion across the cultural sector, increasing the visibility of migrant artists and using its platform to influence policy and generate opportunities for underrepresented creatives working in all art forms.

At the very heart of Maokwo's mission is a commitment to women, community engagement, championing unheard voices, minoritized artists, tackling discrimination and creatively nurturing young creatives.
